Lookout Mountain was part of the John-son family's heritage, estate, and experience, dating to the antebel-
lum era. Here Col. Whiteside developed around his Lookout Point a pioneering "auxiliary health suburb" and tourist re-sort, which included a luxury hotel and a turnpike road to connect the summit with the distant city.
Col. Whiteside prematurely died and his son-in-law, A. M. Johnson, developed the St. Elmo suburb at the mountain's foot. But Lookout also developed, in broad and numerous ways, as seen partly in the fifty vintage images below.*
